in praise of the simple life

July 2, 2018

How long should a blog post be? How long should any communication be? How long should a life be?

A colleague of mine who is just starting his blog recently asked my this.

Jay Conrad Levinson was one of the most successful business authors and speakers. I got to know him quite well after I cold-called him and asked him to write a book with me. He said yes, becoming one of my key mentors.

I asked him once what he thought his talent was. "Writing simply about complicated subjects," his answer illustrating the point.

Following that I asked him to critique a page of my writing. His response: "I prefer writing that is brief and clear. Yours is neither." Point taken.

My fourth book in the blindspotting series called "simplicity and freedom", with W. Brett Wilson and his friend John Francis, is out in a few weeks.

The fifth anniversary of Jay's passing is this fall. This one is dedicated to the model of simplicity himself. He went out the way he came in. Elegantly. And with Grace.
